A comic opera in two acts by Gilbert & Sullivan

The Pirates of Penzance

Ahoy mateys! Get ready for opera on the high seas with Gilbert and Sullivan's popular piratical comedy. The story begins as young Frederic is due to be released from his accidental apprenticeship to a band of pirates; he dreams of living an honorable life dedicated to love. However, a leap year loophole puts his freedom on the line. When the very modern Major-General's doting daughters arrive, hearts are promised, vows are made, and eventually pirates are pardoned in this light-hearted comedy.

PAST HIGHLIGHTS

Here are some of Katharine's career highlights from the last few years.

Guntram

An opera in two acts by Richard Strauss | In Concert

Completed in 1893, Richard Strauss’s first opera to receive a premiere is rarely performed today. The ASO’s presentation marks its first performance in New York City in this century. A riveting story of love, guilt and renunciation, Guntram reveals a young Strauss positioning himself as the successor to Wagner. In his very first opera, Strauss’s mastery of orchestral writing combines with the ethereal melodic arcs that anticipate his later, famous operas, from Salome and Elektra to Der Rosenkavalier.

An opera by Charlotte Bray | World Premiere

American Mother

In October 2021, Diane Foley and Alexanda Kotey meet in a courthouse in Virginia. She, the mother of journalist James Foley, who was murdered in 2014, and he, a member of the terrorist group that held James and three others captive for years before killing them. Despite seemingly insurmountable divides, their conversation reveals that even hatred can be overcome and that human stories go beyond simple labels of "victim" and "perpetrator."

Based on the book by Colum McCann and Diane Foley, the opera American Mother, composed by Charlotte Bray, explores this remarkable case that garnered international media attention, telling the personal story of a fateful day in Diane Foley’s life.

An opera in five acts by Claude Debussy

PELLÉAS ET MÉLISANDE

Lost, confused, and frightened, Melisande is coerced into marrying the overbearing prince Golaud, and in her marital melancholy, the young bride grows close to her handsome brother-in-law, Pelleas. Golaud’s rage sets the stage for this timeless tale of forbidden love, family jealousy, and regret. Debussy’s luminous orchestrations propel the drama to ecstatic heights, the music a striking contrast to this lean new production by Dutch director Jetske Mijnssen.
